What happens when you need a getaway from your getaway? In our case, we left our Baixa-Chiado hood for a day trip to Sintra. The summer residence of Portuguese royalty, Sintra is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 1809 Lord Byron wrote to his friend Francis Hodgson: "I must just observe that the village of Cintra in Estremadura is the most beautiful in the world."
For Annabelle, it is a place where flat surfaces need to be checked for puddles constantly, so as to not wet my pants for a 3rd, 4th, 5th time upon taking a much needed seat. My sister and I walked from the train station all the way up to the Castelo dos Mouros and the Pena Palace. The reward upon reaching the first peak was one of the most breathtaking views I have ever witnessed.
