Just Say Thank You!

God, I had tiny tear droplets in the corner of my lemur eyes while taking the subway to work this morning and thinking about agreeable women everywhere. I have long suffered from compliment denial as well, so it's no surprise that (although my parents/upbringing/family dynamic was a lot different than Patty's) this quote resonated with me.

"Wow, thank you so much for the compliment!" Patty answered brightly, to end things. At the time, she believed that it was because she was selflessly team-spirited that direct personal compliments made her so uncomfortable. The autobiographer now thinks that compliments were like a beverage she was unconsciously smart enough to deny herself even one drop of, because her thirst for them was infinite.""

Jonathan Franzen, Freedom, p. 52

2010 (and maaaaybe last half of 2009) was definitely the year I started to learn to smile and say thank you. A little late in life, but hey, better late than never.

While I'm on the topic of books, take a gander at that book in the center up there for a sec, and its author on the far right... Although linguistics was, admittedly, my very least favorite Anthropological discipline in college, it will always have a special place in my heart. In Through the Language Glass Guy Deutscher spends some time proving language can affect how we perceive the world through some informative and entertaining examples like the emergence of color words cross-culturally, gender systems & identification, and orientation & spatial relations. You can read an introductory interview here, at the Paris Review or this swell, earlier article here, at the Guardian.

About Me

My photo
I'm an LA transplant now living in Brooklyn. I develop film projects by day, write at night, and have a dangerous predilection for vintage Robinson Golluber scarves- this blog serves as a tiny window to everything else I do when I'm not satisfying those first three passions. I'm trying to blog more and tweet less @annabelleqv. What about you?
